May Hunting Tips - Sports

May Hunting Tips

As I am writing this I am looking out my office window at a cold rain. We had a beautiful April with many days with above normal temperatures. May is now here and it has not been above normal yet. Here in Wisconsin the general rule is not to plant before Mothers Day. You never know when you will get killing frost. We are getting ready to plant our Food Plots. Turkey hunting is almost over and we will devote the rest of the spring to creating food plots. The soil samples have been analyzed so we know how much fertilizer to use and if we need any lime to get the PH to the proper level. This year we are going to plant three new plots and reseed our two older plots. We will create a couple of Plots with different clover mixes and two or three different fall attractant food plots to hunt over. We will be using our own food plot seed this year. In the past we have used seed from the large food plot seed manufactures with mixed results. I did a lot of research and I found that many of the expensive, premium seed mixtures have quite a bit of inert matter, which is material to take up space. It is junk that will not grow. In some cases, 30% to 50% of the mixture is inert. This means, that if you are paying for a 2.25 LB bag of seed, you are not getting 100% seed. We thought there has to be something better, so we created our own seed mixtures. These mixes all have less then 1% inert matter, and are made with the best seed available. The plots that we will be planting in this spring will be great forage for the deer and turkeys. These plots will provide the wildlife with a lush, food source that will available all year for the game to feed on. The Plots that we will plant in late summer or early fall will be our hunting plots that are designed to attract deer in October, November, and December when most of the other crops are brown and dead. We chose the location of these hunting plots to be on or near a deer travel route, so that when the deer are moving through they will almost always stop and have a bite to eat. We have selected the Plot location to be near a funnel that connects a long, narrow strip of woods with a large section of woods. This location is good because if a buck is traveling through he will have to pass within bow range to get to the food plot. We have also started some mineral licks near our hunting areas. The supplements that the deer need are calcium and phosphate, with vitamin s A, D, and E. This mixture will give the deer the nutrients they need during the antler growing season. I like to find a low spot near a good deer travel route and work up the soil, and then mix the supplement with the soil. After it's mixed pour a bucket of water over it. This saturates the mixture. The deer will eat both the mix and the soil, after a few weeks the deer will have a hole dug trying to get every bit. You should start one in April, redo it in June, and then again in August. If you want bigger, healthier deer make a Mineral Lick. If you are interested, here is a link to our mineral lick page; /Mineral-Lick

Send me an email and let me know how the mineral licks and the food plots are going.

Good Luck,
