Stun Gun Use - Top Eight Tips

Self defense products are experiencing a boom. Part of the reason is they work.

Stun guns provide a completely legal and non-lethal self defense solution for all walks of life and are excellent tools in personal protection. A stun Gun is a hand-held, battery-powered (some fully rechargeable) device designed to deliver an electric shock to an attacker.

A stun Gun has two prongs at the end of the device. Touching an attacker with the prongs and pressing a button will create an electrical current to go from the prongs through the garments of the attacker into his body, causing the attacker to lock up and collapse.

The pulsed current causes muscles to work super fast, quickly depleting them of needed blood sugars. It also interrupts the microscopic neurological stimulus that controls muscle movement. The results are disorientation and loss of balance. Full recovery can take as much as 5-10 minutes allowing you to escape and get help

Even though the voltage can be as high as 1,500,000volts, the amperage is low, so it will not cause any permanent injury to the person or dog who receives the shock. There is no proof that the electrical charge of stun guns has adverse psychological or neurological effects. The effect on the heart or other major organs is very insignificant.

Every once in a while someone tells me they don't work which leads me to believe they haven't been used properly. So here are some tips for the best way to use a stun Gun.

1. Learn where the optimum points of contact are for maximum effectiveness. The best points of contact are the rib cage, upper hips, and shoulders. If you only touch an arm or leg, it will only disable that one limb.

2. Maximum effectiveness occurs when the stun Gun is applied for 3-5 seconds.

3. As a general rule, aim for anywhere on the torso where the volts will affect the entire body.

4. Misuse of a stun Gun can be grounds for legal action and may be a crime. Stun Guns are not toys. Stunts and games are best left to the 'experts' on You Tube.

5. Even if the assailant is touching you the current will not pass to you. There is no shock-back.

6. Do not discharge the unit into the air for more than one second. Repeat firings for longer durations can damage the stun Gun and void the warranty.

7. When walking in dangerous places (i.e. a dark parking lot at night) it is best to have your stun Gun out and ready for ultimate safety. You aren't going to have time to fumble in your purse for it when under attack.

8. I advise people to warn the would-be attacker by holding up a charging stun Gun and yelling 'back off.' Sometimes the sight and sound of a charging stun Gun is enough to scare off the bad guys. From a distance the crackling noise alone and blue sparks that stun guns give off when activated may be enough to keep attackers at bay.

If you are in the market for a self defense product look for quality, effectiveness, and a biggie-LEGALITY. Stun guns, tasers and pepper sprays are not legal in some states. Check with your local police department first before you get one.
