What defines a battle rifle? The big question is, was the LAR-8 really designed to be a battle Firearm Or based on the caliber could the LAR-8 really of been meant for an alternate purpose? Is the LAR-8 designed for uses similar to the M-1 Carbine? These and many other question are basically what the argument revolves. Sure the LAR-8 functions, but with its little bullet, it can't really be called a battle firearm, can it?Well, there are lots of rifle makers these days taking caliber out of the debate by building AR-style rifles in .308. The 7.62 AR-rifle is what Eugene Stoner envisioned from the start. Looks like with the 7.62 in AR we are going back to the futureThere's not enough time in the day to answer these questions. RRA stepped up and gave the world a .308 caliber AR Firearm that hits with the power of a battle firearm, but carries like an LAR-8. There will always be those that want to debate. You find the choice is clear in this review.Oiled up and smelling good from RRA, the first thing you notice upon assembly is that you have a stout yet maneuverable Firearm in your hands. It is a .308 and heavier that its lighter counterpart 5.56, but balanced well. A fine Firearm indeed tricked out with a 6 position CAR stock. An especially nice touch is the "half-quad" hand guard. Don't let the term half-quad fool you, you may think of just two rails, but don't worry, it has all four. The flip-up front sight is a well-built unit with stout ears protecting the adjustable front post. Quality looks to be the name of the game for this rifles iron sights. There is one on each side of the barrel and one below allowing you to mount any sort of sling system you would like.I love the look of a bayonet, but lets face it, who uses a bayonet? Why not make it a small rail instead of a bayonet lug? Th ere was just enough room on the rail under the sight for a laser and I also added a Harris bipod. The bipod mount easily and flipped forward like a charm. I would have liked to see a rear sight on this rifle, but that's an option, not factory standard. And speaking of which, the RRA hard case is solid, well built and easily identifiable as the container of an RRA product. Case really did not matter, I am all about the Firearm and the case matters not.I think it was Ben Franklin who said "The proof of the pudding is determined by how many 165-grain bullets you're able to put into a bad guy in five seconds." In this case, let's say five would be the minimum. If you have ever handled an AR-style rifle, the controls on the LAR-8 will be almost second nature. I say almost, because there are two small changes on this Firearm. The RRA magazine release button is ambidextrous and can be activated from eith er side of the rifle and the bolt release is located at the bottom rear of the magazine well. A trigger finger ambi bolt release is a great feature. While I am on the topic of the magazine release, the Elite Operator uses FAL metric and L1A1 inch magazines. So there should be no trouble finding 20-round boxes for your reloads. Now, on to the shooting with my new 7.62 Firearm and Eotech in hand. It was dead on at 25 yards. Finally after 50 to 75 yards, I braced the rifle on the post and started dropping rounds on the 100-yard target. Combat accuracy was outstanding. So what can this baby do on longer distance groups? I fired as fast as I could get the dot back on group. I am happy! Better than advertised, 1.5 MOA.The Smith flash hider worked very well and the 1:10 twist ratio seemed perfect for the 165-grain ammo. Another feature I really liked was the sealed battery storage area behind the rubber butt plate of the Operator CAR stock. Eac h battery tube of the Operator CAR stock is also spring-loaded to make sure your batteries come out as easy as they go in.If there is one thing to note about the 7.62 caliber AR-style rifles on the market, it is that parts are not universally interchangeable. Alternately the 5.56/.223 AR firearms are generally compatible for an almost endless number of parts combinations. Each maker has apparently come up with what they consider to be the best idea for some part or another with their own 7.62.As stated on the RRA website, the LAR-8 uses a unique receiver thread and barrel nut. Use only RRA approved parts for modifications. Improper use of third party parts could mean life or death, the specifications must be correct. So, now you know that. The parts don't interchange with other 7.62 AR parts out there. Don't try it. A Firearm that clearly offers power and versatility For combat use, more penetration for buildings and vehicles. Hunting firearm, no problem, if you want to use this as a Modern Sporting Rifle, the Elite Operator will have no trouble taking deer-sized game at any range you feel comfortable shooting.RRA LAR-8 AR10 308A1276 Elite Operator has a list price of 1670.00. I ended up ordering it over the internet for much less. The majority of dealers in my area required list price ... plus which did not set well with my financing plan. I obtained my Rock River Arms Entry Firearm LAR-8 Model 308A1276 RRA from Class 3 Weapons at a considerable cost savings. Rock River Arms is at this time selling their .308 rifles at an aggressive price. Other Rock River Arms rifle models in 7.62 start at an incredibly economical price of $1,069.00 according to their website.GunShop
