10 REASONS YOUR GUN MAY BE WORTHLESS - Self Help

There are many who purchase a Gun for the purpose of defending themselves against an attack. But is it really a smart purchase? What are the ways that guns are not effective in an attack? In what situations can it actually make the situation worse?

1. Guns tend to bestow a false sense of security to their owners, causing them to ease up on other non-lethal forms of protection such as with effective alarm systems, and teaching their families basic practical self defense maneuvers. How about pepper spray, stun guns, and tasers?

2. Pointing a Gun at someone gives them the legal right to defend themselves by shooting you. If they do, and you die, who will be there to tell the real story in court about what happened? Your murderer could walk free on a self defense plea.

3. Whoever you plan to use the Gun on could easily be a more experienced shooter than you are. All it takes is the bad guy to be a little quicker than you. Since, most of us don't wear body armor on a daily basis, you better hope you have a good life insurance policy.

4. An attack is more than likely going to take you off guard. Since you are not likely to be holding your Gun in your hand when you or your loved ones are attacked, and the bad guy is, good luck having any advantage in an attack.

5. Some purchase expensive safes or keep their guns tucked away in hard to get at places. Yes it keeps the guns safe from children, and thieves, but render them impotent against the potential armed attacker they were intended to be used on!

6. Attackers often come in pairs and groups. Even if you are ready for an attack with your Gun in hand, in a two against one situation, you better be Steven Segal.

7. We are not always in the right place at the right time. Here is just one of countless situations that illustrate this:

You walk in the door after a hard days work to find your wife being gang raped at Gun point on the livingroom floor, and your children tied up. A horrific situation indeed. You are even more alarmed when you notice a couple of the guns they have are YOURS! They forced your wife at gunpoint to open your precious Gun "safe"

You are completely helpless in the above scenario and if you survive it, your life will never be the same. Perhaps the money you invested in your Gun might better have been spent on a top of the line alarm and surveillance system.

8. Criminals that attack you could easily be pumped up on any number of drugs that give them advantages that you don't have such as superhuman strength, speed, lack of fear or regret, and whatever desperation they have to attack you in the first place. Sure you might get a couple shots off on them, but what if they keep coming? All it takes to kill you is one shot.

9. Are we really going to be able to pull the trigger without hesitation? Killing is not in most of our natures. Hesitation in a Gun showdown could easily lead to your own demise instead of your attacker's. When you really think about it, in most attacks, what we really want is to escape. Paralyzing your attacker with a stun gun, taser or even pepper spray buys you time to get away thus ending the problem.

10. Attacks often come at close range and from behind you, giving you no time to draw your gun. If your enemy did not have a Gun before, he may have one now!

The obsession with guns in this country is not likely to cease anytime soon. Maybe we should rethink our methods of self defense, putting more emphasis on "armor" rather than arms.

Always remember, our most useful weapon is our brain, and using it to stay out of harm in the first place should be our number one line of self defense.
