Hunting is a very popular form of recreation. Some people spend countless hours preparing for their big hunts. Everyone has a different reason for hunting. For some if may be a time to get away from the world and spend quality time with your friends and family. Others it may be a chance to shoot a Gun and some may simply just enjoy spending time in the outdoors and observing the wildlife. When planning for an elk hunt you need to be very well prepared. If you are inexperienced then I would do research on the subject so you don't walk blindfolded into such an adventure as this.

Elk Hunting can be a magnificent experience if you are prepared. For the unprepared, it can quickly escalate into dreaded experiences that will never want to be repeated again. After you get your tags and determine a location it is wise to start planning for the worst conditions possible. Because of the late season of the elk hunt, you will find yourself stuck in the mountains and waking up in the morning with a foot of snow on the ground. I speak from experience.

With as much time as you spend sitting around waiting for that trophy to step into your scopes, it's important to dress warm. Dress in layers. Bring a heavy coat, a light sweater and long sleeve shirts. Ponchos are also highly recommended. Along with dressing warm, it's equally as important that you wear warm boots that will keep your feet dry and warm. Kodiak boots come highly recommended for occasions like this. They were specifically constructed to keep your feet warm, dry and protected in the harsh Canadian environments. Extra socks to change into are always something to carry. There are other brands of mens waterproof boots to consider as well.

When planning an elk hunt, you need to think about how to get to your locations. The problem with elk is that they are never in the easy to get locations. They are typically found in the most rugged environments known to man. What does this mean to you? Getting up to these locations can be tuff. Hiking is always a possibility. Horseback is one of the more popular methods and today's modern world a four-wheeler or a utility vehicle (side by side). Even then you are not guaranteed to get where you want to go. You're usually not on a specific trail and sometimes the timber is way too thick. After you shoot your prized trophy you need to dress it and haul it off the mountain. If you're backpacking, this will make for a long miserable trip including 2 or 3 trips back and forth to get everything down off the mountain.

Everything else for an elk hunt is pretty similar to any other back pack trip you will have. You will need a tent, cooking supplies, warm sleeping bags, toilet paper, a water filtration device and whatever else you may thing you need. If properly planned out, an elk hunt with your friends and family can turn into some of your most memorable moments in life.
