Federal Gun Laws License

Federal firearms licenses exist to regulate nationally guns and all transactions related to them. Each of the fifty states has its own particular firearms laws as well, but they cannot contravene federal law. This means the federal firearms licenses are controlling for the nation. These licenses, of which there are currently nine, cover pretty much every type of legal transaction related to firearms, which include guns and their Ammunition and explosive devices, known as destructive devices.

The first five licenses deal exclusively with non destructive devices, which are basically guns and their Ammunition, excluding armor piercing Ammunition.

License 1 is for dealers.

License 2 is for pawn brokers.

License 3 is a special license for collectors. It allows them to posses otherwise illegal weaponry if it is over 50 years old. It must also contain some quirk in design or function that justifies its exemption from law.

License 6, there is no 4 or 5, is for the manufacturing of non destructive devices.

License 7 is for the importation of non destructive devices.

The final four licenses, 8, 9, 10 and 11 are for destructive devices and are tiered as follows: selling, manufacturing, importing, and manufacturing and importing, respectively.

Within the provisions of these licenses, there are specific instructions detailing the applicants duties and obligations that must be followed as conditions for the license. Fees and relevant federal agencies, such as the BATF, the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms and its role are explained as well in the license provision. Penalties for violating federal firearms laws, which are felonies, are also discussed.

Before any of this can take place, however, there are basic requirements that all must fulfill and it is as follows:

1. You must be 21 or older.

2. You must have not been prohibited by law to posses firearms.

3. You must not be violating the Arms Control Act.

4. You must not lie on you application.

5. You must have an authorized place to carryout firearms transactions.

Federal firearms licenses are a tiered structure of regulations implemented to control the flow of firearms in and out of the country. Those wanting to deal in firearms will find a particular license which corresponds to the activity in which they would like to engage. After this, it is a process of following the instructions during the licensing procedures.
