What defines a Pig hunting firearm? Forget about your fathers old rifle, seems like things are changing and the LAR-8 is the rifle desired for Hogs. Just recently I finally bought my Rock River Arms AR10 Model 308A1279 Rock River Arms via my hometown transfer dealer. Here is my review of an fantastic Firearm at a great value. A Hog hunters dream.Well, there are lots of rifle makers these days taking caliber out of the debate by building AR-style rifles in 7.62. The .308 AR-rifle is what Eugene Stoner envisioned from the start. So, are we moving ahead with a 7.62 AR or are we going back to the starting point?5.56 or .308, there's not enough time in the day to debate on the .308 vs 5.56, I wanted knock-down power of the .308. RRA stepped up and gave the world a 7.62 caliber AR rifle that hits with the power a Pig hunting Firearm should, but functions like an AR. The LAR-8 Standard Operator will c ertainly provide the power, accuracy and versatility modern shooters really want.My Rock River Arms Standard .308, fresh from the Rock River Arms manufacturing facility. True it is heavier than a .223 version, but it is well balanced and easy to handle. A fine rifle indeed tricked out with a Operator A2 stock. An especially nice touch is the "half-quad" hand guard. Without a doubt a very well thought out hand guard configuration.Sturdy engineering is clearly evident in the RRA sight design. Quality looks to be the name of the game for this rifles iron sights. The gas block front sight also serves as the anchor for three different sling attachment points.I love the look of a bayonet, but lets face it, who uses a bayonet? Why not make it a small rail instead of a bayonet lug? I mounted a Command Arms bipod on the lower portion of the quad rail and that worked slick. The bipod mount easily and flipped forward like a charm. I would have liked to see a rear sight on this rifle, b ut that's an option, not factory standard. And speaking of which, the Rock River Arms hard case is solid, well built and easily discernable as the container of an RRA product. The good news is that's the only part of this Firearm I could complain about.Rapid fie is not a problem for this rifle. In this case, let's say five would be the minimum.If you have ever handled an AR-style Firearm, the controls on the LAR-8 will be almost second nature. I say almost, because there are two small changes on this Firearm. The RRA magazine release button is ambidextrous and can be activated from either side of the rifle and the bolt release is located at the bottom rear of the magazine well. A trigger finger ambi bolt release is a great feature. Speaking of magazines, the Standard Operator is compatible with FAL L1A1 inch and metric. RRA also offers magazines in polymer. Now, on to the shooting with my new .308 rifle and Eotech in hand. I started plinking at 25 yards, it was dead on. Then still shooting offhand, I engaged the targets at 50 and 75 yards. Combat accuracy was outstanding.So what can this baby do on longer distance groups? I fired as fast as I could get the dot back on group. I am happy! Better than advertised, 1.5 MOA.The 168 Ammo worked great and seemed be consistent with several brands. Another feature I really liked was the sealed battery storage area behind the rubber butt plate of the Operator A2 stock. Push the Operator butt plate button on the left side of the butt plate and it slides down exposing a storage area for several of the CR123 batteries.If there is one thing to note about the .308 caliber AR-style rifles on the market, it is that parts are not universally interchangeable. Alternately the 5.56/.223 AR firearms are generally compatible for an almost endless number of parts combinations. Each maker has apparently come up with what they consider to be the best idea for some part or another with their own 7.62.As stated on the RRA website, the LAR-8 uses a unique receiver thread and barrel nut. No barrel nut (either separate or as part of a tubular hand guard or quad rail hand guard) except those made specifically for the RRA LAR-8 should ever be used on an RRA LAR-8 or upper half. Use of incorrect parts may cause injury or death. So, now you know that. The parts don't interchange with other 7.62 AR parts out there. Don't try it. A Firearm that clearly offers power and versatility For combat use, more penetration for buildings and vehicles. Hunting Firearm, no problem, if you want to use this as a Modern Sporting Rifle, the Standard Operator will have no trouble taking deer-sized game at any range you feel comfortable shooting.I ended up purchasing it online for much less. Most dealers in my location desired retail plus which did not set well with my budget. I acquired my Standard Operator from Class 3 Weapons in Houston Texas at a appreciable savings of only $1,449.00, plus a very reasonable shipping rate considering the size of the shipment. According to where you live your price will fluctuate based on shipping and taxes if applicable.
