The key to recreation is knowing your limitations. In addition, the definition of sport is very broad and does not always require intense training and expense. Depending on your fitness and interest levels, there are a host of recreational sports to choose from. Here are some that you can rent or try cheap to start with until you find one that suits you.
Bowling: This sport can be enjoyed by all ages and abilities. What is really nice is that you can rent all of the necessary equipment and find matinees and specials for lanes. A bowling alley near my old place had quarter madness specials one night a week where you paid a $5 cover and got lanes, shoes, soft drinks, and snacks for 25 cents each. Look for a deal like this for a perfect time to test drive bowling. If you like what you see, look for used balls and bags on EBay or at a used sporting goods store. You can find specials on shoes if you keep your eyes open as well.
Golf: Another sport that can be enjoyed by all levels, you dont have to break the bank to test the waters. I started with my grandfathers hand-me-down clubs and then spent between 5-30 bucks each for a few starter clubs. Invest in one lesson so that you at least know how to hold the club. (Trust me on this, your buddy that thinks they can teach you is not an LPGA/PGA certified pro and this makes all the difference.) You can also borrow or rent clubs from a range to try out. If you become hooked, look for specials at large chains like Roger Dunn. My husband once got a $600 set of clubs on EBay for less than half the price (from a Power Seller with an exceptional rating of course)!
Swimming: One of the least expensive sports to get started in! You can check out the public pools, lakes, and even the ocean on the right day. Please invest in a set of lessons if you havent tried it before and youll soon find a relaxing way to burn calories.
Shoot some hoop: For some great upper-body conditioning, dribbling and shooting a basketball is an exceptional activity. You dont have to play competitively; you can just practice your free throw or engage on some friendly one-on-one.
Roller skating/inline skating: This can be an inexpensive and fun way to get some exercise! Check out a local rink during off-times and rent some skates cheap. If you become hooked, look for deals on discontinued models or less popular brands. Many states have recreational sidewalk trails ideal for this!
Bicycling: Depending on where you live, you can rent a bike for a day to try it out. If this is the case, there will be a scenic trail to relax and exercise with. Take someone you love (or like a lot) and pack a picnic lunch to have at an ideal spot.
Walking/Running: This is probably the easiest recreational sport to become involved in. You can start slow and work up to a faster pace/greater distance. After youre hooked, you can invest in the shoes and gear that pros use.
Whatever you try, remember to have your patience and sense of adventure handy! Yes, adventure trying new things qualifies.
