Bandhavgarh - The Tigers DenBandhavgarh National Park is one of the most popular national parks in India. Bandhavgarh is located in the district of Umaria in the state of Madhya Pradesh. Bandhavgarh National Park is spread over an area of 448 sq km in the Vindhya hills on the banks of Sone River.When compared to other national parks, Bandhavgarh is small, but full of exotic wild life. Formerly, Bandhavgarh was the game reserve of the Maharajahs of Rewa who killed the tigers unceremoniously, some of them killing more than 100 tigers in a life time. After independence, Rewa State was merged with Madhya Pradesh and though Bandhavgarh came under the regulations of Madhya Pradesh, the Maharaja of Rewa still retained the hunting rights. Bandhavgarh was declared a national park in 1968, and ever since numerous steps have been taken to retain Bandhavgarh National Park as an unspoilt natural habitat. In 1993, Bandhavgarh was declared as a Tiger Reserve.At the heart of the national park is the Bandhavgarh hill. The park is surrounded by valleys, meadows and swamps and the topography is ideal for wild life. An abandoned fort is found within the Bandhavgarh National Park. The Bandhavgarh Fort was deserted in the 1930s when the Maharajah moved his capital to Rewa.In Bandhavgarh, at day break hordes of jeeps and canters get ready at the entrance of the park and take all the wild life enthusiasts through the park where you can spot animals. Elephant rides can also be arranged by the forest department.Bandhavgarh has the highest density of Bengal tigers known in the world. And the forest authorities have also played an important role in putting a spectacular show for the tourists. Other than the tigers, the main wild life in Bandhavgarh are Leopards, Sloth bears, Spotted deer, Sambar, Langur and Red Faced Monkeys, Jungle Cats, Fox, Mongoose, Striped Hyena, Bandicoot Rat, Asiatic Jackal, Wild Boars, Nilgai, Antelope, Indian Bison and Elephants.The main avian species are Hawk Eagle, Storks, Egret, Lesser Teal, white Eyed Buzzard, Black Kite, Crested Serpent Eagles, Black Vulture, Egyptian Vulture, Common Peafowl, Red Jungle Fowl, Dove, Parakeet, Kingfisher, Indian Roller and Peacock.Bandhavgarh has a few individually famous tigers. Charger, a male tiger was named that because of his habit of charging at elephants. Sita is another female tiger who once appeared on the cover of National Geographic and is considered to be the most photographed tiger in the world. Bhagela museum has a lot of items belonging to the Maharajah of Rewa, including weapons, old photographs and a stuffed white tiger named Mohan.Hotels in Bandhavgarh can be found both in the budget and luxurious rates.The closest railway station to Bandhavgarh is Umaria.
