Street self defense moves are designed to be short, sharp and effective. There are no complicated stylish moves as with many martial arts. Street self defense moves are simple to learn, don't need great strength or force to apply them and are all about living to fight another day.
I remember the first time I visited an aikido club - I watched from the side of the mats and was admired the grace of the flowing techniques. The breakfalls the students performed were awesome too. But I asked myself would those moves work in a real street fight? After ten years studying aikido I have developed reasonable skill in the art but when ever faced with a real violent confrontation I would rely more on simple street self defense moves.
Any martial arts student will tell you they have moves they fall back on. In aikido we learn literally hundreds of techniques but generally when under pressure we go back to the moevs we learned first. For me, shiho nage is usually the move I come back to but each student has their own.
Martial arts like krav maga and the Russian Systema are more direct and designed for the modern day world we live in. This is part of the problem with many traditional systems - they base their defense and attacks on things which rarely happen in real encounters. Most street fights are about grappling, head butts and swinging punches!
Street self defense moves are practical and effective. There is a mindset to learn - it's not about ego or winning it's about surviving! If you can get out of there you must - there's no shame in turning and running If you can avoid the situation in the first place you should. Be alert, be aware, survive. But if all else fails you have moves you can use which are instinctive and will work even when fear grips you. The friendly training environment most people train in doesn't prepare them for the rough world out there!
