North America is home to some of the worlds most challenging animals. We have the ever elusive Whitetail Deer, the majestic Elk, and the awesome Grizzly Bear just to name a few. It does not matter what critter gets you out of bed in the wee hours of the morning and makes you sneak your way to your favorite stand or blind on opening morning, they are all exciting to hunt. Most of us grew up hunting because the tradition is usually passed on from father to child. Some of us were not so lucky, and had to learn this time honored tradition later on in life. Either way, we are a unique group of people that love the outdoors and the challenges that come our way while we are out hunting. When summer comes we are usually at the ball field or out fishing on the weekends. All of us are looking forward to those crisp cool mornings of the fall when the leaves are just beginning to change. We know we have to wait patiently until opening weekend of bow season. It is the end of August now and we have been scouting for a few weeks or maybe all summer. We have kept constant check on our game cameras trying to find out if the Big One we saw last year is still out there. Our bows are tuned up and we are practicing every chance we get. Finally, opening day arrives and we can barely sleep the night before because we are so excited about the upcoming hunting season. We are out there every day our lives will allow us. Sometimes we call in sick because Field & Stream said that day in the middle of the week was the best day to hunt this month. Then, as always, the last weekend comes around and we have yet to get a shot at the Big One. We had another great year hunting. We were able to spend time with old friends and swap tales about the one that got away. We hesitantly come back to reality and start working on our honey-dos that we have put off for the past few months. We now have to patiently wait for fall to come back around.
I have been hunting like this for years, but recently I found something new. I found out that there are game ranches all over the U.S. that offer Exotic animal hunts. There are no seasons on these animals, most do not require a license, and a lot of them can be hunted year round. Some of you may wonder what an Exotic animal is. An Exotic is any animal that is not native to that area. They were imported from some other area or country. Fallow Deer and Red Stag come from Europe, Black Buck Antelope& Axis Deer come from India, Aoudad Sheep and Addax Antelope are from North Africa. These are just a few examples of the many Exotic animals available today in the U.S.
A friend of mine told me of a hunt he had gone on and that it was late spring when he went. I booked one later that summer and took a gold medal Fallow Buck. I was hooked! My hunting season is never over now. I do not try to kill myself during the regular hunting season by hunting daylight to dark for days in a row like I used to. When I get the urge and have to go hunting, I simply do a little research, find an outfitter I like and book the hunt. Now some may think these hunts are expensive, but if you do some investigating, you will find that they are actually pretty reasonable compared to leasing land and keeping it up year round.
Some of these animals are only held in captivity because their native habitats have been destroyed or they have been hunted to almost extinction. Florida holds the largest Axis herd in the world and there are more Black Buck Antelope in Texas than in their native land. Exotic game ranches have really been expanding across the U.S. As private land is getting harder and harder to find and peoples lives are getting busier and busier, hunters are starting to slowly diminish in numbers. These game ranches are trying to help us save what little bit of tradition we still have in this nation. They are able to manage their herds much better than we can in the wild. They are also able to control predators and poachers much better than we can on free range land. The animals on these ranches flourish and are in no way endangered. Another important issue is that so many laws are changing about Gun control on public lands, that it may not be long before we can only hunt private lands. If you love to hunt as I do, then I encourage you to look into Exotic ranches during your off seasons. You may be amazed at how much you will enjoy hunting on these ranches.
