How to get better in Basketball Passing - Sports - Basketball

Passing the basketball is one of the most essential skills in the game. Passing is the fastest way of transporting the ball from one player to a teammate or from one area of the court to another. It is also the best way to set up a teammate for an assist. Passing has been part of the game from the very start, and mastering the proper way of passing should be done by every player, in every position. Here are a few ways of how to get better in basketball passing:

Don't telegraph passes: When passing the ball, do not telegraph your passes. Telegraphing a pass means showing defenders that you are about to make a pass even before you make it. This gives defenders an advantage to deflect or even intercept the ball. A way to prevent this is to avoid looking at your teammate as you are passing the ball. Sometimes, it is even advisable to look in the opposite direction of the pass, to throw off the defender. Players can look at basketball videos of themselves passing the ball so they can see if and how they are telegraphing a pass.

Pass to the chest or the shooting pocket: When passing the ball to players, it is important to aim at the player's chest or anywhere in the shooting pocket area. This is an effective way of setting them up for a jump shot in case they are open. This is also a great way of making sure that the receiver can handle your pass. Passing accuracy is very important, especially when passing to open players for a shot. In most cases, shooters are left open by basketball defense for only a fraction of a second, and so getting shooters the ball the right spot saves them precious milliseconds to pull up for the shot.

Use fingers, not palms: When passing the ball, it is important for players to use their fingers and not their palms. This makes the passes more accurate and precise. Using the fingers also makes it easier to control the speed and movement of a pass. Controlling accuracy, speed and movement is important in making several kinds of passes such as the bounce pass. A good way to do this is to snap your wrists when making a pass and follow through after. Your fingers should be pointed at the player you are passing to. This helps with accuracy and timing.

Know what kind of pass to make: there are many different situations that can occur in a game and players should know what the best pass is for each situation. Sometimes, it is about getting the ball to the player as fast as possible, and sometimes it is about setting up a player for a position to score. When learning how to get better in basketball passing, players should be familiar with every kind of pass and when to use them in a game.
