If you are a sportsman then I am sure that you are aware that our kids are the future of hunting for us all. This fact has never been truer than in today's times. The youngsters of this day and age are stuck inside - targeted by corporations whose non-stop attack against them includes TV shows, movies, games and internet programing. All of these distractions have our kids stuck inside doing nothing other than blankly staring into an LED lit screen.
If we are hoping to pass on our hunting heritage to our kids then we have to compete against these strong outside influences. What we really must do is bring our "A" game to this challenge. Kids today get instant gratification and satisfaction from the technology that they use. When kids today want to view a specific TV show or video they... with the tap of a finger get in on demand on their i-phone, i-pad or computer. Because they have grown up this way many children feel that if you can't get it right now with the click of a button then it's not worth getting at all.
That brings me full circle to the topic of this article. Consider a hunting preserve when introducing a youngster to the sport of hunting. We as hunters need to get our kids out of the house and back into nature. We have to get our kids hooked on hunting from their very first outing.
The youth of today are programmed for video game type action where BAM... from the second it's turned on the action starts. I, by no means am saying that your kid must kill an animal or better yet lots of animals in order for this to be a success. What I am saying though is that there needs to be lots of action, seeing tons of game constantly throughout the hunt. For a child's first hunting trip, this is where I feel a Hunting Preserve has quite the advantage over other standard hunts.
Hunting Preserves - because it's their business always have huge wildlife populations, cozy hunting boxes and awesome hunting ACTION. The word "ACTION" is the key in that last sentence. That's what are children are looking for, that's what they want and that is what we should try and give them for their first time out.
Obviously before your child is ready to go out into the woods and harvest an animal there are several preparations to be made and skills that must be mastered and learned. Firearm training, hunter safety, woodsman ship and many other skills have to be taught and learned before the big day. Just plan from the beginning to make the reward for learning and successfully mastering all of those skills the hunt of a life-time!
I know that I succeeded in doing this with my boy and his first hunting trip. I know that he will never forget it. From the word go he was hooked on hunting and I am quite sure that he still is to this very day. I have a life-long hunting buddy now because of my actions when he was just starting out. He started successfully as a child and now at 14 yrs. old he is quite the hunter, taking several deer over the years all on his own.
I wish that the hunters who read this article will consider taking a child and educating them on hunting with an emphasis on rewarding them for a job well done by taking them on their very first hunting trip. It matters not if that is to a game preserve as suggested or just to the woods for some crow shooting or whatever... just make it fun and full of ACTION. By doing so we will be successful in keeping the next generation of hunters involved in the sport and this will ensure that hunting stays strong and grows well into the future.
