Cub Scout Belt Loops - What they are and how to get them - Hobbies

Becoming a Cub Scout is an age old pastime with rich traditions embedded in today's modern culture and society. There is approx 1.6 million registered Cub Scouts in the US alone, and many millions more around the world. It is not a competitive pastime, rather it challenges them to better them self mentally and physically, all while having fun.

The Cub Scouts Academics and Sports Program is a program designed to help the Cub Scout better themselves physically, emotionally and mentally. It aims to provide a clear set of guidelines and requirements for scouts to follow, after which if completed successfully they receive awards and merits based on the particular activity.

Items of recognition are awarded upon successful completion of the requirements for each activity. These include:

- Belt loops- Pins- Pocket Certificates

Cub Scouts of all ages from Tiger Cubs to Webelos can participate in the Cub Scout Academics and Sports program and earn a belt loop or pin for each activity. Activities can be done individually, in the Den, or as a Pack. ( Archery and BB-Gun Shooting can only be earned through a certified instructor, not at a den or pack level. ) A scout participating on school teams or other organized teams may use those activities to fulfill requirements of this scouting program.

Sports Program - Archery- BB Gun Shooting- Badminton- Baseball- Basketball- Bicycling- Bowling- Fishing- Flag Football- Golf- Gymnastics- Hiking- Hockey- Horseback Riding- Ice Skating- Kickball- Marbles- Physical Fitness- Roller Skating- Skateboarding- Snow Ski and Board Sports- Soccer- Softball- Swimming- Table Tennis- Tennis- Ultimate- Volleyball

Cub scout belt loops for sports are silver, while the belt loops for academic subjects are gold. The belt loops for BB Gun shooting and Archery are brass colored.

Each academic subject and sport contains 3 requirements that must be completed in order to receive a belt loop. Participation can take place at a variety of places, including within the community, at home or within the den. Participants are encouraged to do their best to improve their development and learning, whilst promoting sportsmanship and scholarship.

Cub Scouts with learning difficulties or disabilities are also encouraged to participate. They are given the opportunity to pick their own activities and have a program designed specifically for their needs by an adult.
