Goose Calls and Other Equipment for Hunting Geese - Outdoors - Hunting

Hunting geese is an outdoor sporting activity that a good number of people enjoy. After all, the Call Makers & Collectors Association of America did start with 32 members. Now, there are over 5,000 members in this organization.

The Call Makers & Collectors Association of America is an organization formed for people who collect and make goose calls and other game calls. Hunting can be fun, but like any other sport, one needs to have the right gear and tactics.

Game calls

In waterfowl hunting, different game calls are used for attracting prey. A goose call, for example, has to be that of the particular species residing in that area. There are 6 in 1 whistles that are capable of reproducing the sound made by 6 different species of geese.

Geese will only react to sounds made by their kind. Thus, by reproducing the sound they make, hunters do not have to look all over for some sport.

Shotgun, bow or crossbow

Obviously, hunting will require the use of a weapon. In some places, using a bow or crossbow is also allowed. However, compared to using a bow or crossbow, a shotgun is much easier to use.

There are different types of shotguns. Some are attached to boats and others are handheld. The choice really depends on the hunter.

Hunting blind

Hunting blinds are used to hide the hunter. It also hides a hunter's hunting dog and equipment. A goose will not go near any area that appears threatening or unusual. Thus, there are even hunting blinds made of natural vegetation, logs and branches. Most are more conventional and are made of plywood, burlap fiber and plastic or cotton camouflage.

Pit blinds and layout blinds are two common types of blinds used. The pit blind is a solid structure that is usually placed in a hole on the ground. A layout blind offers better mobility. It is made of an aluminum metal frame with a canvas cover.

Decoys

Decoys combined with goose calls can ensure a good hunting trip. Decoys are usually made of molded plastic. These are a lot easier to mass produce. In the past, hunters used decoys carved from wood. Some even used live birds as decoys.

These are hunters who prefer bringing their dogs along hunting trips as well. There are usually Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers or Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. Hunting with dogs ensure that the shot bird ends up on the table.
