There are several distinctive points in a Soviet film known as "The Forest People of Siberia," which is now on view at the Film Guild Cinema. It is a compilation of scenes taken by an expedition into the depths of Ussirsky to picture the life and customs of a tribe, referred to by the producers as Ude.
The physiognomies of these Mongolian types are interesting. One of the clever sequences in this production is the idea of having one of the men who is seen in several stretches of the picture looking at himself on the screen for the first time. He wonders as he looks at the animated image and wonders still more when he realizes that it is his own moving photograph. He wants to go nearer the screen, but is stayed by a restraining hand. Then he gets used to the sight, and is much amused by his own seriousness and his antics in the film.
These Udes are perceived on the hunt. In one episode a native kills a boar with a rifle. The most exciting of these hunt scenes, however, is where a Ude with a long spear is perceived at first waiting for and then stalking a bear. The man waits for the rustle of a leaf and then plunges his spear into a spot where he knows the animal must be. The animal succeeds in getting a few yards away to where there is a tree which the bear tries to climb, but that is out of the question, as it is but a sapling. The bear looks pathetic, but the hunter has no mercy, thinking of the beast's head, the rest of the meat and the fur. Udes must live and therefore they can't afford to indulge in sentiment over what is equivalent to their bread and butter.
