There are many considerations to ponder when you are trying to find the right sport to participate in for stress reduction. For example, if you are really high strung, it is probably best to avoid anything too competitive - you may just add to the problem! If you are a more low-key personality that needs a release that has structure and camaraderie, a softball or flag football league just might be for you. Bowling leagues are also really fun until someone gets too serious or has had too many trips to the concessions stand! Many local health clubs also have handball and racquetball leagues that organize year 'round.
I'll mention golf again here as well (surprise, surprise) but will do so with a caveat. I have said many times how I believe it to be therapeutic to go to the driving range and pretend the ball is your problems. You then proceed to whack the heck out of the ball and it feels great. On the other hand, I have been at the range hitting very well and then suddenly lose my grip or something that causes me to hit like a newbie. The latter can be quite frustrating and I've even had strangers ask me why I am hitting my clubs against the mat. Oops! Don't let that happen to you - if golf is not a stress relief then stop until you think you can control yourself!
Another surprise, but I've got to say it again - surfing or snowboarding are the best stress relievers I have personally experienced! There is no other feeling quite like either on the planet and for those of you who have engaged in these sports, you know what I am talking about! These can be costly, time consuming, and difficult if you aren't in shape for it so don't stress yourself out if you can't do it.
The point I am trying to make is to get outside and move around! I have found stress relief in shooting the basketball, throwing the football, inline skating, and simply going for long walks! Straightforward exercise is the best stress relief in my opinion and the side effects of better health are not so bad either! Just remember - know your limitations and ask a professional if you aren't sure.
