Duck hunting, like most game hunting, is a sport that has long roots that date back to the beginning of our civilization. To be a successful duck hunter, though, you need to have the knowledge and skills that come along with experience, which many newcomers don't possess. If you're wanting to get into this fun outdoor sport, follow these tips to ensure you're next hunt is a success.
While everyone will argue what the best duck hunting weapon is, I've come to believe that a 12 gauge shotgun is usually the most effective and well-rounded Gun to use for taking down waterfowl. Although, something that not many beginners think of is the importance of using the right Ammunition. When using shotgun shells, use large steel shot bird shot to help ensure that your shots take down the duck and not just cripple them.
Duck decoys have been used for hundreds of years and are still arguably the most important tool at a duck hunters disposal. If you don't already know what a duck decoy is, let me explain; a duck decoys is an artificial duck (usually made from cork, wood, or plastic) that's been skillfully crafted and carved to resemble a specific species of duck. Duck decoys today have been greatly modified, but their principle of use still remains - they are intended to attract any nearby ducks so that the hunter will be able to take a shot. Some decoys found on the market today are quite complex and can even have mechanical parts in them that allow the decoy to swim.
If you plan on going duck hunting, decoys are a must, but you first need to know what kind of decoys to use and how many. Scout your hunting area ahead of time and observe the ducks that fly overhead. What species of ducks are they? How many are in the flocks? These are questions you should try to answer when you go scouting to help you when you place your decoys out.
One common mistake many beginners make when using duck decoys is simply placing too many of them in the water. I saw one hunter with 3 dozen decoys out in the pond and the ducks were just flying right by it. You don't have to use that many decoys, that's just too many. Try a smaller number like 6 or 7. Place them about 30 yards away from where you plan on hunting from and place them downwind.
Another important tool you should bring with you is a duck caller. Don't just start blowing it, though. Stand still and listen to the sounds of the ducks and try to replicate what they are sounding like. It will take some time and skill, but after a couple hunting trips you should be able to get it down.
You'll want to wear the proper clothing when you go on your hunting adventure. If it's cold, dress in layers with camouflage covering as much of your body as you can. Be sure to wear your reflective safety vest, though, as it's both illegal and dangerous to hunt without them. Following these simple tips will help ensure your hunt is a success.
