How to Build a good hunting knife - Outdoors - Hunting

It is easy to make a hunting knife if you have the all the right materials. To build a hunting knife all you need are a get started book on how to build our hunting knife, an electric gas torch but ordinary gas torch will do, a wheel and belt grinder with various grit belt which are about 40, 80 and 120 grit belts, cardboard, steel marker pencils, and steel sheet that is made from carbon steel that you can normally get from scrap yards, which will be use for blade part.

I will be discussing with you the quick guide to begin creating your own blade metal knife. But before that you must know that there are two basic parts of hunting knifes which are the handle that grips the blade and the metal blade. You need to secure a right type of metal to use that is hard as the carbon steel; though you need a little a amount of carbon steel for carving.

Hunter should have an idea what would the design be for their knife before creating it. Designing is also a time of trying out and experimenting. Draw your design in a paper and choose the best design you made. Draw the actual size and dimension of the chosen design on a cardboard and then cut it out. Use it to try if you are satisfied with your designOnce you are satisfied with your design, place your design on the steel sheet and trace to create an outline. You need to draw another outline imitating the design which is one eight inch far from the original outline. Imagine this how your outline looks like, the original outline or actual design is inside the bigger or the second outline. This is the time in which you cut and sharpen mistakes made by removing the extra.

Use either a band saw or gas torch for cutting out the blade however using band saw needs more hard work that using gas torch. Use gas torch to cut by following the outline on the steel sheet but don't forget to leave at either one enough portion for the handle to fit in.

After cutting out the blade you need to grind and sharpen to distinguish the quality of the knife's edge. Evenly grind the end of the blade using wheel grinder and then polish it surfaces. After that, sharpen and polish more the edges of the knife by using belt grinder. You will begin with 40 grit belt then re grind with 80 grit belt to remove the marks and the last process would be for 120 grit belt.

To give your knife its durability you need to harden the blade of your knife to remove impurities and brittleness. To harden your blade all you have to do is to heat the blade in a red, high, and hot temperature and after heating let it cool off naturally. The heating is done using either torch or electric kiln but electric kiln is still the best source of heat for hardening knife blade.

The blade is ready for usage once it's the blade is already on a normal temperature. You can re grind it again with 120-grit size or higher, for some remaining irregularities. Then put the leather sheath, strong handle to grip the blade strongly and other remaining accessories for the knife.
