In this brief article, I am going to be giving some general bow hunting techniques for whitetail deer. Every bow hunter from the beginner to the so called expert should know these basic tips. Really, these should be something that you pay attention to even if you are not a bow hunter. Although, many Gun hunters seem to think that these rules do not include them because they can "shoot farther". That's OK, we will all do what we want to do anyway. I'm just going to go over the basics here.
The first of the bow hunting techniques is extremely important although many hunter forget about is scouting. You may thing that you don't have time to scout, but in realty, it can be done relatively quick (to a point). It can be as simple as taking a walk through the woods and looking for trails, rubs, scrapes etc. Believe me, just a little time in the woods can make all the difference in bagging that whitetail deer. It's common sense, so just think about it, you walk into the woods without ever spending a second there, you find a spot that looks beautiful so you setup. Everything seems like it will be okay so you wait and wait and nothing comes. You think, that's hunting but your wrong! You didn't prepare at all and it could have been different. My point is, take a walk through the woods and know your territory if you want to increase your odds. Of course, if your fine with bagging a deer every 5 years or more, have at it!
The second of the bow hunting techniques is calling a whitetail in to you. The best call in my hunting tool bag has always been my grunt call. There are various ways to use this depending on the time of year and whether the deer are rutting or not. If the bucks are rutting, I like to alternate between the short and long grunts such as blah, blah, blah, blah for the short. What this does is signifies a buck chasing a doe and if your lucky, it may make a buck mad or curious enough to come in. This could also be used throughout the year outside of the rut because whitetails are known to speak all year long. The long rut is just a couple longer deep grunts making it an invitation to fight. But be warned that this will scare some of the smaller bucks away, so use it your own risk. I use many other calls, but I could write all day about it and I don't have that long.
The third of the bow hunting techniques I'd like to share is scent and cover up. There are so many different types of scents out there that you can buy just about anywhere. What I like to do is use scent away on all of my clothes and use natural doe urine on the bottom of my boots. Many bow hunters will tell you that you need to be using this scent and that scent, but let me tell you just save your money and use the basics. Another important thing about scent control is hunting the wind the correct way or you will be busted. Always hunt with the wind in your face of where you expect to see the deer. The big bucks and the mature doe's will wind you extremely fast if you forget about this. You could sit there all day long and not see anything if you forget to take this into account.
I know that I only went through three bow hunting techniques here, but I have already went on way to long and don't want to bore you. You can check out the rest at my blog below.
