The leapers rifle scopes 5th gen models are possibly the hidden superstars of the rifle scope world. Possibly due to the cheap price (just over budget level) most hunters looking for a new rifle scope pass them by while heading towards a multi hundred ?$ purchase
In this article I am going to specifically evaluate the Leapers Rifle Scopes 3-9x50 and 3-9x40 mil dot models and tell you how to get a good deal on one immediately after you finish reading.
Leapers Scope Review: 3-9x50 and 3-9x40 5th Gen Full Size AO RGB Mil Dot ModelsIf you don't know what those numbers mean by the way then I'll briefly explain.
3-9 means the range of magnification levels the scope has. In this case 3-9 means that it can magnify anywhere from 3x to 9x. The level of magnification is adjusted simply by turning a dial on the scope to zoom in and out.
On the Leapers 3-9x variable is nice and wide and will suit you for shooting from about 5 to 500 yards.
Some cheap rifles scopes with large magnification options offer less than ideal image clarify in their higher ranges due to the use of cheaper, lower grade optical lenses. However, this is not a worry with the Leapers 5th Gen for reasons I'll outline below.
Leapers Optics LensesThe Leapers optic lenses are grade A, fully, multi coated for total protection and maximum light transmission so you can be sure you will get crystal clear vision. No low grade lens vision problems at high magnification.
Very Close Range FocusThe 5th Gen scopes are also able to focus at a much closer range than most scopes, at 3x you will be able to focus on a target as close as 3 yards away (most scopes are 8+) this is very useful when trying to get a pinpoint shot on a tiny target.
The 40 and 50 in the 3-9x40 and 3.-9x50 means the diameter of the 'big end' lens (Objective) diameter in millimetres.
As a rough guide the bigger the better in terms of light capture, transmission and ability to acquire and track a moving target. More and better light transmission is better for low light shooting too meaning you can operate better at dawn and dusk. This may be essential for you as many species tend to move most at dawn and dusk.
40 or 50mm lens is considered an excellent medium to large size lens, well suited for low light use. When combined with 3-9x magnification you will get the ability to operate dawn to dusk at 3 to 500 yards.
SWAT Illumination CrosshairsThe 5th Gen allow you to light up the cross-hairs with variable intensity levels of green or red illumination. Red is handy in clarifying targets in very bright light and green is good in lower light or even in the dark if used alongside night vision kit such as hunting torches and infra red illuminators.
Parallax AdjustmentThe Leapers scopes also come with parallax adjustment by way of easy to use lens adjustment. The parallax effect, if you've not heard of this before, is what happens when targets seem to drift or wobble against the background which makes accurate shooting difficult.
When your scope has Parallax adjustment this problem is solved by using the Parallax dial, then you'll shoot a lot better. The Leapers scopes have settings from 5 metres upward and are easy to adjust.
ZeroingWindage and elevation target turrets have center hex screws that allow for locking of zero and resetting of zero if you fiddlw with them and want to go back. A very useful function found on very few rifle scopes at any price level.
AppearancePhysically, they looks the business. It's what is known as a full size scope so not one for juniors or small carbine rifles. The models are extremely well packed and presented and also come with quality flip up caps to shield the lenses, screwin sniper sunshades, good English instructions and mil dot range cards.
